Nintendo announces Starfox Zero

Starfox Zero was announced for the Wii U today. Arguably the high point of Nintendo’ s E3 Digital Event, a new Starfox is what many Nintendo fans were hoping for. All of the cast members like Skippy and Falco are back, and the game features the trademark dogfighting and aerobatic obstacle dodging that made the original games exciting.

Starfox Zero will feature transforming Arwings, allowing the player to traverse the ground like a  Robotech Veritech fighter. There will also be a new Drone type plane called the Gyrowing. The Landmaster Tank returns, this time equipped with a limited flight form. I think it’s great that piloting an Arwing is now like flying an X-wing that’s also a Transformer.

Starfox Zero will take advantage of Wii U’s unique setup by displaying a third person view of the Arwing in flight or combat on the main living room screen, while displaying a tight first person cockpit view on the player’s tablet. This dual screen view will give the player greater battlefield awareness, while allowing more precise targeting on the smaller screen. I can’t wait to try it.

Starfox Zero will be released Holiday 2015. If you’d like to hear more about my opinions of Starfox and other announced E3 games, please check out the Plug and Play podcast.
