YIIK A Postmodern RPG first look

When a bizarre elevator accident claims the life of a young woman, unemployed recent college graduate Alex Eggleston logs onto primitive 1990s message-board for answers. His research leads him to a shady conspiracy, and he enlists the help of his friends to seek more answers. Y2K is  a turn-based JRPG which is heavily influenced by Mother series (Earthbound here in the States) Haruki Murakami.

Conversations with NPCs are full of humor and cultural references, and at least in the demo I played, you have to fight that character before they will give up critical information to your quest. Combat is fun and varied. Each character has their own unique skills to attack, and as you attack, you enter a mini game. One character might have to hit a spinning record at the right time, another might have a tiny scene from an 8-bit game to play through.

The humorous dialogue, the hip characters, and the fun battles were more than enough to make me want to play more of Y2K, and I hadn’t even gotten very far in the story. YIIK A Post Modern RPG is set to release soon for PS4, Wii U, Vita, PC, Mac and Linux. I look forward to speaking more about this game when it releases on the Plug and Play podcast.
