Game Review | Cursed Castilla

The original Maldita Castilla was developed by Spanish indie studio Locomalito and released in 2012, but just in time for the Halloween season this year the game has received a major overhaul and a global release on Steam as Cursed Castilla (a.k.a. Maldita Castilla EX). This new version, released on October 20, takes the original game, adds in a lot more options in terms of gameplay and settings, and adds in some new content and challenges to beef up the already-fun experience.

Cursed Castilla will remind many of you retro-enthusiasts of classical platformers like Ghosts N’ Goblins and Ghouls N’ Ghosts. In fact, the game brought back many frustratingly-fun memories of playing those games as well as the original NES Castlevania as a kid. Given that Locomalito seems to be heavily inspired by the arcade classics of the 1980s and early-90s, it’s no surprise that Cursed Castilla follows in this mindset.

The video review above shares pretty much everything you’ll need to know about this one and shows off the first full stage of gameplay in the process. Given that this little gem is only $11.99 on Steam right now, I think it’s well worth the investment for anyone that enjoys a fun challenge with a unique setting (the game is set in medieval Spain and draws heavily on Spanish folklore).
